Off the clock
Many of my most valuable and memorable experiences in university came from real-world projects and international competitions during my Engineering Physics degree at UBC. I believe this kind of hands-on, project- and competition-based learning is an increasingly important part of the educational experience today.
NASA Centennial Challenge · 2005
I captained UBC Snowstar, a 20-member engineering team, in the Space Elevator Games, the first of NASA’s Centennial Challenges. Our 7 kg robot climbed a ribbon powered only by a 10,000-watt searchlight shining on its solar panels. The judges named us the team most likely to win the next year, and the project landed in The New York Times and on CNN.

DARPA Grand Challenge · 2005
Long before self-driving cars were a product category, I was part of UBC’s student team building an autonomous vehicle for DARPA’s Grand Challenge, the driverless race across the desert. Discovery Channel Canada featured the project.

At Canada’s first Red Bull Flugtag in Vancouver, teams launch homemade, human-powered flying machines off a pier and into the ocean. Most of them fly about as well as you’d expect.
